Great video but I'd like to add a couple of criticisms. I don't think Steeves understands how conservative Christians think. We don't want a theocracy. We want limited government that is too small to try to prevent us from living our faith in society. Secondly, I'd like to take a dig at his progressivism. The lecture audience gives the impression that they are smug liberals who feel intellectually and morally superior like Steeves. Of course, we know where that all led. Portland is a hellscape due to the liberal politicians who reflected the largely liberal population. Homelessness, drug abuse, sexual assaults, Antifa and BLM riots, filthly streets, burned out buildings, overwhelming debt, high taxes are what Portland is known for today. I'm sure the audience in that hall would not have imagined the destruction of their city just 12 years later. The destruction continues and most Portlanders can't wrap their heads around their moral and intellectual failure. It's astounding how people will not see what they see because their ideology blinds them.

Let me clarify, this theocracy is by no means a choice of the Iranian people. The established regime is certainly an imposed system that Iranians tolerate at best, suffer through mostly, and leave in many cases for other countries. To say "they will willingly give up the separation of Mosque and state in order to have a theocracy and trade away their freedom" is a fully and completely intellectually dishonest and manipulative, and couldn't be further from the truth. ANYONE from Iran could tell you that.

With no previous experience in Iran, Rick Steves was knocked out by the richness of their culture and the desire of so many Iranians to end the animosity between Iran and the U.S. And yet Steves is not blinkered about the nihilism of the leadership of both countries. Ultimately it will be the youth of America and Iran who, free from the bitterness of past confrontations, will bring the countries together — or not.
